Chinese Breakfast 粥:Congee Basics

April 30th, 2013 No comments

Congee Basics

Congee is another name for rice soup or rice porridge. It’s made by cooking rice in a large amount of water for a long time so that the grains lose their structure, soften and distribute their starch throughout the mixture. Congee may be sweet or savory and can contain ingredients as basic as rice and water or as complex as spices, marinated meat, nuts, fresh herbs and other garnishes. The ingredients in a particular type of congee are really what make up its nutrition facts; rich ingredients equal a high-calorie and high-fat bowl of porridge, but keeping the dish simple also keeps the calorie and fat counts low.

April 29th, 2013 No comments

Read more…

April 23rd, 2013 No comments

April 19th, 2013 No comments

A study says that offline socializing brings more happiness than online. Offline socializing means meeting real people, spending time with family and friends, and talking to them in person instead of texting, emailing them, or checking their status updates on social networks.

Social networking is one of the greatest inventions of our time. It gives people access to the latest information, to find a way to entertain themselves, and to talk to each other without worrying about distance. The bad thing about social networking is that many young people are so addicted to it that they will become restless if you ask them to go offline for a while.

Now, it’s time to take a break from social networking and go offline socializing. You will see more quality time with loved ones and maybe a healthier lifestyle as well.

April 18th, 2013 No comments

Source: China Daily

Some people have had it with TV. They’ve had enough of the 100-plus channel universe. They don’t like timing their lives around network show schedules. They’re tired of $100-plus monthly bills.

A growing number of them have stopped paying for cable and satellite TV service, and don’t even use an antenna to get free signals over the air. These people are watching shows and movies on the Internet, sometimes via cellphone connections. Last month, the Nielsen Co. started labeling people in this group “Zero TV” households, because they fall outside the traditional definition of a TV home. There are 5 million of these residences in the U.S., up from 2 million in 2007. (Source: CBSnews.com)

April 18th, 2013 No comments

Screenagers are techno-savvy young people, reared on television and computers. The term was coined in 1997 by Douglas Rushkoff in his book Playing the Future. He argues that young people who have used computers and other microchipped devices since infancy will have effortless advantages over their elders in processing information and coping with change when they reach adulthood.

It’s as if they come into this world with a game controller in one hand and a mouse in the other. They’re referred to as generation wired, cyber tots, digital kids and screenagers.
