Chinese Family: Generation, age, and gender hierarchy

November 13th, 2010 No comments

In our Chinese 1 unit “My Family”, students were introduced to write words like dad, mom, brothers and sisters. However, there is something unique in Mandarin that relates to Chinese culture: the Confucious Generation, age, and gender hierarchy. This hierarchy of generation-age-gender defines an individual’s status, role, privileges, duties, and liabilities within the family order. Family members know precisely where they stand in the family by referring to this order.

In English, a brother is a brother no matter he is older or younger; while in Chinese it’s very important to know if he is an elder brother or a younger brother, since increasing age is accompanied by higher status. So for Chinese 1 students,  the word brother in English should be translated into 2 words: 哥哥(gege – elder brother) and 弟弟(didi – younger brother). The same applies for the word “sister”. No wonder students of Chinese language always complain about the difficulty of this language.

This cultural difference has also brought a lot of trouble to some Chinese journalists working in the western countries. When they write their text in Chinese based on an interview in English, they often realize that they forget to ask for the important detail: the brother mentionned is older or younger? Sometimes they have to call the interviewee back to check, and they are often laughed at for being so serious about this detail.

Space terms used to talk about time

November 10th, 2010 No comments

Both Mandarin and English speakers use horizontal terms 前 qián (‘‘front’’) and 后 hòu (‘‘back’’) to talk about time. In addition, Mandarin speakers commonly use the vertical terms shàng and xià.

For YEAR and DAY, horizontal terms are used, while for MONTH and WEEKS, verticle terms are used.

Time Concept in Chinese Language

Time Concept in Chinese Language

By Lera Boroditsky, Stanford University

How is the domain of time learned, represented, and reasoned about? Certainly some elements of time are apparent in our experience with the world. From experience, we know that each moment in time only happens once, that we can only be in one place at one time, that we can never go back, and that many aspects of our experience are not permanent (i.e., faculty meetings are not everlasting, but rather begin and end at certain times). In other words, our experience dictates that time is a phenomenon in which we, the observer, experience continuous unidirectional change that may be marked by appearance and disappearance of objects and events. These aspects of conceptual time should be universal across cultures and languages. Read more…
